Northern Ireland repossession advisory service soon to launch

Northern Ireland's Housing Rights Service is set to launch an advisory initiative in January aimed at helping people who face repossession.

Commenting on figures announced in a court service statement that revealed mortgage arrears in Northern Ireland have nearly doubled since the same period last year, advice services manager Ursula Toner said: "They do not come as surprise."

She has advised anyone who is unable to meet their mortgage payments to contact their lender immediately before seeking free independent advice.

Ms Toner added: "We have experienced a 300 per cent increase in demand for our specialist debt service."

Credit Action has issued similar advice to people whose homes could be repossessed.

A charity spokesperson also suggested that borrowers in debt keep a money diary to help keep track of personal finances in order to work towards allocating money for savings as well.
